Adonis and Aphrodite nature trails: An amazing hiking combo

by Savvas Michail

Description

The Adonis and Aphrodite nature trails are a premier hiking combination that seamlessly unites the highlights of two legendary paths. Located near Neo Chorio in the Polis Chrysochous area, this route offers a perfect balance of lush forest and open coastal views. By merging these trails, you experience the absolute best of the Akamas Peninsula, culminating in breathtaking panoramic vistas of the rugged Mediterranean coastline.

This circular combination is a moderate intensity hike covering a total distance of approximately 11 km. While the trailheads for the Adonis and Aphrodite trails are located about 500 meters apart along a paved road, the most practical approach is to park at the Baths of Aphrodite. From there, you can walk the short paved section to reach the Adonis trailhead and begin your loop. The route features an elevation gain of roughly 491 meters, reaching its highest point at the spectacular Moutti tis Sotiras peak. You should estimate a total hiking time of 3 to 4 hours, which allows for a comfortable pace and plenty of time to take in the viewpoints.

Viewpoints

The Adonis trail begins as an open, wide path before tapering into a narrow, lush green track that winds through dense vegetation. A few kilometers in, the trail hugs the face of a towering mountain, revealing a dramatic gorge on the opposite side. This vantage point creates a stunning contrast, balancing the enclosure of the forested path with the vast, sweeping views of the canyon below.

A couple of kilometers further, you arrive at Aphrodite’s Oak, a massive, centuries-old landmark that serves as the perfect natural rest stop. Estimated to be between 500 and 800 years old, this majestic tree offers a wide, shaded canopy where legend says the goddess herself once sought refuge. Situated near the medieval ruins of Pyrgos tis Rigainas, the spot features a picnic area and a stone fountain, providing a peaceful atmosphere to recharge. As the junction where the Adonis and Aphrodite trails meet, it marks a key transition point before the path continues its ascent.

You will find a water fountain here, however hikers are often advised that this water is non-potable, so it is best for cooling off rather than drinking.

Below you can admire the medieval ruins of Pyrgos tis Rigainas (Queen’s Tower), which are believed to be the remnants of a medieval monastery.

The most impressive point of the hike is undoubtedly Moutti tis Sotiras, the trail’s most iconic and breathtaking viewpoint. Reaching this peak rewards you with an unparalleled panoramic view of the rugged Akamas coastline, where the deep turquoise of the Mediterranean meets the wild, untouched landscape. The scenery here is nothing short of extraordinary, offering a bird’s-eye perspective of the entire peninsula and the shimmering sea stretching toward the horizon.

Finally, the journey leads to the Baths of Aphrodite, a naturally carved limestone pool shaded by an ancient fig tree. This tranquil grotto is where the goddess of love was said to take her refreshing baths and rest in the cool waters. According to local myth, anyone who splashes the spring water onto their skin will be blessed with eternal youth and beauty. It is a serene, beautiful sight that perfectly captures the magic and mythology of the Akamas Peninsula.

Starting points

The trail is circular and for this combination of trails, people usually park at Aphrodite’s baths parking area. The recommended route is to do Adonis trail first so when you return from Aphrodite’s trail to enjoy continuously the view of Akamas and the sea. The GPS location is described further below in the nature trail information table.
